Slate Asset Management made the headlines towards the end of last year with the announcement of a deal to acquire, together with Ares Management, a portfolio of retail parks in Poland from Trei Real Estate. To find out why this North American player has joined the ranks of other investors entering the country right now, we spoke to Brady Welch, the company’s founding partner and co-chief executive officer
Nathan North, ‘EurobuildCEE’: You are in the process of acquiring a portfolio of retail parks from Trei Real Estate in your first transaction in Poland. Could you tell us something about Slate Asset Management – how the company was established and subsequently expanded – and what fields you’re active in as well as the scale and types of your assets under management?Brady Welch, founding partner and co-chief executive officer, Slate Asset Management: This is our first investment in Poland. We’ve been looking at the Polish market for many years. But we are a selective investor, one that is not driven by an allocation threshold – we are always looking for the best value. Slate Asset Management was founded by myself and my brother, Blair, in Toronto 21 years ago. We did a number of deals in Canada, then we expanded to the US and into Europe, investing through private equity and infrastructure funds.
