A little mall talk (204) październik 2015

Reaching maturity

The maturing process is usually a painful one – and the Polish retail market is no exception to this. It is currently undergoing a metamorphosis, as it becomes more demanding and difficult to work in – but it is certainly more attractive, too. There are no easy projects anymore and you have to work twice as hard as in the early days of Polish retail to achieve satisfactory results. However, thanks to this the quality of the shopping centre market in Poland has also vastly improved.

Growing pains

The retail market in Poland slowed down after 2008 and never achieved the heights it reached before the credit crunch. However, the path it is currently taking has not just been determined by the financial meltdown. It is rather the natural consequence of the gradual saturation of shopping centres in terms of quantity and quality, as confirmed by the resort to ever more sophisticated and varied (also in terms of technology) retail concepts.

Modern thinking

While some hypermarket and shopping centre networks are scaling down their operations in Poland, there is one that is still vigorously expanding – both in terms of location and new formats: Carrefour. We spoke to Ronan Martin, BU expansion and shopping malls director and vice-president of Carrefour Polska, about the company’s bold approach to the challenges ahead for the retail market.

GPoland looking to expand at home and abroad

Master-franchising firm GPoland is now focusing on major expansion plans for the company. The products it offers are intended to fill gaps on the Polish market. It has recently founded an academy to train its business partners how to retail in line with its standards. The company is looking for new partners, to open more stores in Poland and in the future to open its first outlets abroad. It is aiming to open another twenty or so boutiques by the end of 2017.

Wild days are over

Fewer greenfields, some brownfields, more redevelopments and probably residential projects. These are the niches Acteeum Group is now interested in in Poland. ‘Eurobuild CEE’ talks to Arne Bongenaar, the company’s managing director, on what it is planning to do next.
