Volkswagen opens EUR 250 mln Kaluga plant

RUSSIA Three years after starting the construction its new 32,000 sqm engine plant in Kaluga the Volkswagen Group has officially launched the property.

The plant will produce the 1.6-litre EA211 gasoline engines, which are set to be used for the Volkswagen Polo and the Škoda Rapid models produced in Kaluga, as well as for the Volkswagen Jetta and the Škoda Octavia and Yeti cars which are being built jointly with GAZ in another Russian town, Nizhny Novgorod.

The annual production capacity of the 400-people engine plant, whose total investment cost amounted to EUR 250 mln, will reach app. 150,000 units. Volkswagen is reportedly the first foreign automaker to operate its own engine plant in Russia. A significant proportion of the components required for the new engine are set to be purchased from local suppliers, says Volkswagen Group.
