Warsaw to be rerailed
Infrastructure“The aim is to provide residents and travellers with an efficient integrated transport system. As a result of PKP’s investment project, which is based on previous projects and our research a fast, comfortable and accessible railway system is to be developed,” says Andrzej Bittel, a secretary of state in the Ministry of Infrastructure.
“Under the railway infrastructure development programme drawn up by PKP Polskie in 2019 called ‘Directions of railway network development at the Warsaw railway junction – master plan for railway transport in the greater Warsaw area, upgrades are already being introduced and further investment is planned, including the reconstruction of the Warsaw cross-city line, new stops, and more rail connections, with the system to be integrated with the city’s traffic as well as its long-distance shipping and freight infrastructure,” announced Ireneusz Merchel, the CEO of PKP. The biggest redevelopment project is the Warsaw West – Warsaw East cross-city line, which will be upgraded to accommodate more trains. Eventually there is to be two trains every five minutes on the line with new signalling devices to improve safety.
The line will connect directly to the metro system and new stops are planned at Warsaw de Gaulle’a, Warsaw Solec and Warsaw Targówek. They also plan to modernise the exit lines from the Warsaw transport hub to Otwock, Legionowo, Wołomin, Tłuszcz, Sulejówek Miłosna and Piaseczno. The number of train services will be increased extension will make it possible to increase the number of trains per hour to over twelve an hour and will make it possible to run a regular service on an hourly basis. Further investment is being planned for the next budget window including investment in lines between Warsaw Choszczówka – Nasielsk – Kątne, Warsaw East – Zielonka, Warsaw West – the planned Central Airport of Poland – Łódź and the modernisation of the Warsaw-Konstancin Jeziorna line.
A cross Warsaw line is also being planned, to be built sometime after 2027 that will go through Warsaw Wileńska/Warsaw Gdańska – Warsaw Główna/Warsaw Służewiec. The new line will include separate tracks for freight and for passenger services.
