EUROPE EU to kick-start recovery with EUR 2.2 bln for transport

Infrastructure
The EU is to invest EUR 2.2 bln in key transport projects in all member states as part of its economic recovery plans.

The projects, which will receive funding through the Connecting Europe Facility, include 55 rail infrastructure schemes, which will receive EUR 1.6 bln of the total funding.

In the CEE region, the railway projects include the completion of the Rail Baltica network connecting the Baltic States with the rest of the EU (EUR 183.79 mln), the modernisation of the E75 railway in Poland between Czyżew and Białystok and between Ełk and Trakiszki (recommended funding of EUR 385.72 mln and EUR 36.68 mln respectively), the modernisation of Pardubice station and the reconstruction of the Přerov junction in the Czech Republic (EUR 125.9 mln and EUR 57.32 mln respectively), the modernisation of the Cadca–Žilina rail corridor in Slovakia (EUR 39.88 mln), upgrading the Budapest Kelenföld–Hegyeshalom line (EUR 47.1 mln), and the modernisation of the line between Bucharest North station at Henri Coandă International Airport (EUR 38.37 mln).

The programme will also include funding for nine European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) projects (EUR 49.8 mln) designed to streamline the operation European railway network 19 projects to encourage greener fuels for transport (EUR 142 mln).

The EUR 2.2 bln EU contribution to this crucial transport infrastructure will help kick-start the recovery, and we expect it to generate EUR 5 bln in investment. The type of projects we invest in ranges from inland waterways transport to multimodal connections, alternative fuels to massive railroad infrastructure. The Connecting Europe Facility is one of our key instruments in creating a crisis-proof and resilient transport system – vital now and in the long run.
Adina Vălean, the EU Commissioner for Transport

The EU Commission should soon adopt formal financing decisions for the projects and its Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA) will sign the grant agreements with the project beneficiaries by January 2021 at the latest.
