CZECH REPUBLIC M&S "temporarily" closes Czech stores

Retail & leisure
UK supermarket chain Marks & Spencer is to close all of its Czech stores “temporarily” on January 15th due to the impact of Covid-19 and Brexit, according to the company.

M&S has only been selling food in its Czech stores since the beginning of the pandemic restrictions and recently only Czech food products rather than UK imports.

The company’s last Christmas trading statement included the comment: “The free trade agreement with the EU means we will not incur tariffs on our core UK sales. However, potential tariffs on part of our range exported to the EU, together with very complex administrative processes, will significantly impact our businesses in Ireland, the Czech Republic and our franchise business in France, which we are actively working to mitigate.”

In an announcement on Facebook (now deleted), it was explained that:

Our fresh and chilled foods are made in Britain and then exported throughout Europe every day. Delays have been caused by the new system, and customs inspections have slowed all exports from the UK, but we’re working hard to improve the situation.
Helena Vyhnánková, a spokesperson for Marks & Spencer in the Czech Republic

M&S currently has sixteen stores in the Czech Republic. In 2016 it took the decision to close its stores in Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.
