SERBIA Belgrade modernist icon changes hands

Office & mixed-use development
Marera Real Estate Partners, a sister company of Marera Properties, has acquired the Bigz building in Belgrade, which was completed in 1941.

In an investment of more than EUR 40 mln, the 40,000 sqm modernist building designed by Dragiša Brašovan in the city’s Senjak district will now be converted into a modern business centre over a period of 18 months. The project will be carried out in partnership with residential development specialists Aleksandar Gradnja.

The partnership with Aleksandar Gradnja will contribute to the redevelopment of Bigz This is our first joint project and we will certainly continue to expand our commercial portfolio both independently as Marera Properties and through partnership projects as Marera Real Estate Partners. We are well recognised on the Serbian market for our redevelopment expertise and superior office space design. Our focus is on the development of modern properties with innovative and functional solutions.
Milana Sreckov, the CEO of Marera Properties

Bigz suffered extensive war damage after its completion, but finally came into use in 1944 before becoming the home of the Jugoštampa state press house. It was declared a cultural monument and a listed building in 1992. In 2007 it was acquired by a consortium of investors led by Serbian tycoon Petar Matić, the owner of MPC Holding, for RSD 310 mln (EUR 3.87 mln), who himself took an 80 pct stake in the property.
