CZECH REPUBLIC Invalidovna to be put back on its feet

Public buildings
The Czech National Heritage Institute (NPÚ) has unveiled its plans for the renovation of the Invalidovna building in Prague’s Karlín district.

The former infirmary for war veterans, which was built in 1731–1737 and damaged by the floods in 2002, is to be extensively refurbished. Two modern extensions made out of profiled glass are also to be added.

The refurbished building will function as the head office of the NPÚ and the home of the Prague Philharmonic Choir, as well as being open to the public in the form of exhibition and conference facilities as well as space for educational, cultural and community events and activities.

Invalidovna is to be renovated under the Care for the National Cultural Heritage I programme. It is the NPÚ’s largest project and at the same time the largest of the Ministry of Culture financed from the state budget, with the investment costs estimated at CZK 1.95 bln (app. EUR 72 mln).

The entire project should be completed by 2027 at the earliest. Preparatory work is already underway, which should be completed by the end of 2021. This will involve a use study, a construction-historical survey and an archaeological survey.
