Poland Tristram Carfrae on sustainable engineering

Welcome to Eurobuild FM! We invited an excellent expert to the today's episode – distinguished structural engineer Tristram Carfrae, deputy chair of world-renowned design consultants Arup gave us an exclusive interview.

Decarbonising the built-environment (responsible for about 38 pct of global emissions) is a particularly complex task when it comes to the 'embodied energy' expended during the construction process. Tristram Carfrae of Arup gives us his insights into the collaboration and ingenuity needed to maximise the social benefits while minimising the environmental costs of construction – so that we can all enjoy living in a better world tomorrow than we do today.

Tristram Carfrae is one of Arup’s deputy chairs and an Arup fellow. A structural engineer by practice, he has contributed to many award-winning buildings, including the Water Cube for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. He currently leads Arup’s team helping complete Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona using digital fabrication and modern methods of construction.

He is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, was appointed a Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) in 2006, and received the Institution of Structural Engineers' Gold Medal in 2014 and IABSE's International Award of Merit in Structural Engineering in 2018.
