Reach for the skies
A terminal wait
It is clear, however, that with the current rate of passenger growth, more than an extra terminal at Warsaw’s only airport is going to be needed. This is what prompted the Polish Ministry of Transport (then the Ministry of Transport and Construction) to look into finding the best location for another major international airport to serve the capital city – and one that is likely to be much bigger than Okęcie. For this purpose, in November 2003 a list was drawn up of potential sites
Józef Kurek, a mayor of Mszczonów, is currently promoting its city in the ministry, with a final decision possible sometime this month, after which details of the plan will be made public. According to one of the industry-insiders ‘Eurobuild Poland’ spoke to, once a decision has been made, it is likely to be another 10 or even 15 years before the airport is ready.
Low-cost Modlin
Porty Lotniczny Modlin was set up by the PPL to realize the Modlin project and manage the airport. According to its president, Piotr Okienczyc: “It will be an ordinary standard airport. Maybe it could be used by traditional airlines, who might split their services between Warsaw and Modlin. We can also say that it will function as a regional airport.”
