In 2024, coal accounted for 57 pct of electricity generation in Poland, while renewables made up 28.8 pct. By 2030, the country has pledged to increase the share of renewables in the energy mix to 56 pct; however, a major factor in Poland’s plan to transition to a green economy is the introduction of nuclear power. According to the Polish Nuclear Power Programme (PNPP) approved by the Council of Ministers in 2020, the total capacity of nuclear power plants planned to be built is around 6-9 GW. The first nuclear reactor is expected to be commissioned in 2033 at Lubiatowo-Kopalino in Choczewo in Pomerania. This site will eventually have three working reactors with the next two coming online in 2035 and 2037. In fact, the current plan is for new reactors to come into operation every two years between 2033 and 2043. The installed capacity of the six planned reactors should translate into annual electricity production of 53-80 TWh, which corresponds to 31-46 pct of the country’s
