ROMANIA Lidl the green leader of retailers

Green projects
Lidl has attained the highest BREEAM scores in Romania for a retailer for three of the buildings in its portfolio, claims the company.

Lidl’s headquarters in Bucharest has received the BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ certification with a score of 95.8 pct, while its logistics centre in Lugoj has been granted a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certificate with a score of 78.5 pct. The two latest certifications follow the BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ certificate earned by a Lidl store in Bucharest’s Aviației district last year.

The 95.8 pct score of Lidl Romania’s headquarter building, which was completed in January 2018 by Skanska, ranks it as the most sustainable office building in Romania and the third highest BREEAM International New Construction certified building worldwide, according to Lidl.

Under the evaluation, the building obtained a maximum score of 100 points in three categories: site and construction management (carried out and supervised by Skanska Construction Romania), water management, and use of materials – due to the recycled and recyclable construction materials used and the state-of-the-art construction technology employed, including systems aimed at optimising resource consumption.

The building also scored highly for energy efficiency, due to such features its intelligent façade that adjusts the light penetration according to the sunlight intensity, as well as the LED lighting system with presence sensors. A system of 78 geothermal probes connected to a heat pump, used for the heating and cooling of the space, has also been installed. In the comfort and working environment category, the Lidl HQ obtained a score of 93 points.
