POLAND EBRD loans EUR 30 mln for Western Pomeranian wind farm

Green projects
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is to provide a PLN 144 mln (EUR 30 mln equivalent) loan to support the development, construction and operation of a 56MW wind farm in Żelechowo in Western Pomerania.

The project is to be co-financed with mBank, with the borrower being a company indirectly owned by independent Israeli wind and solar power producer Energix Renewables Energy, which has an existing relationship with the EBRD. The company, which entered the Polish market in 2012, is expected to reach 300 MW of installed capacity in the country by the end of 2022.

The 16-turbine wind farm in Żelechowo, which is around 50 km south of Szczecin, is expected to reduce CO2 emissions from electricity generation in Poland by 95,000 tonnes a year.

The aim of the 2019 EU Clean Energy for all Europeans package and the EU Green Deal is to achieve net zero carbon emissions across the EU by 2050. To achieve this will require massive investment in renewable energy over the next few decades.

To date, the EBRD has invested EUR 11.4 bln in 469 projects in Poland, where its focus is on promoting the low carbon economy, enhancing the private sector’s role in the economy and assisting in the development of a sustainable financial system and capital markets. By the end of this year, it aims to align all its operations with the goals of the Paris Agreement and make at least half its financing green by 2025.
