The number of words I’ve written cannot be precisely determined, as my writings have included not just articles and news, but also conference agendas, adverts and other marketing materials – and even menus. It would take an archivist many months if not years to compile all that still exists of my entire output. But a significant percentage of it has long since been pulped – and this is something I will ponder on the next time I buy recycled toilet paper: does this roll contain traces of the invitation I wrote for a gala back in 2014? I’m sure many poets, playwrights and philosophers down the centuries have also wondered about the same thing while out toilet roll shopping.
