Most modern psychiatric hospital completed

Public buildings
POLAND Budimex has completed the construction of the Mazowiecki Provincial Hospital in Ząbki, just outside Warsaw, a project commissioned by the Masovian provincial government.

The hospital is the most modern facility in Poland for people with mental health problems. The seven-segment building comprises nine specialised branches, a modern rehabilitation centre, 300 beds as well as places for relaxation and sporting activities. There will also be rooms for music and movement classes, therapeutic rooms and a counselling centre. Patients will receive care not only from psychiatrists but also from specialists in other fields, including gynaecologists, urologists, ophthalmologists and neurologists.

The building, which has a total area of 22,000 sqm, has taken three years to construct in an investment of more than PLN 104 mln, PLN 95 mln of which has been provided from EU funds and PLN 13 mln from the state budget. The hospital has been fitted with renewable water and air installations. These include heat pumps and solar collectors with which water heating costs can be reduced by up to half.

“The Mazowiecki Provincial Hospital Drewnica in Ząbki has been built using 25,000 cubic metres of concrete for the structural elements, 1,500 tonnes of reinforcing steel to strengthen them and 0.5 mln bricks to build the walls,” reveals Piotr Kurowicki, a contract manager at Budimex. Technological systems have also been introduced that are designed to improve the work of the staff. “One example is the automatic pharmacy system, which consists of a central module with decentralised cabinets. This will make the control and distribution of medicines throughout the hospital more efficient ” adds Piotr Kurowicki.

“Our project is the first new psychiatric hospital in post-war Poland, which is why expectations have been really high for it. I think that we managed to meet them – in 180 days we managed to bring the project to the lock-up stage. Subsequent stages involved intensive and extensive finishing work,” says Dariusz Blocher, the CEO of Budimex.

The hospital grounds are made up of around 10 ha of greenery, with alleys and paths and more than 23,000 plants to provide patients with areas to aid their therapy and recuperation. A winter garden has also been added as well as integration, relaxation and physical activity zones, including a place for playing chess and table tennis. The main focus of the outdoor area is a garden house where sessions or meetings can be held.
