Panattoni has been given the go-ahead to develop a major logistics project on the site of the former Honda plant at Swindon in the south of England, between London and Bristol. According to the BBC, the development will consist of 12 facilities with a total of 670,000 sqm of leasable space.
As the BBC reports, Swindon town councillors have approved plans to redevelop the site around the former car factory. Panattoni had been developing the concept for the use of the site for three years, adapting the design to include suggestions from local residents. As a result, one of the largest logistics parks in southern England will be created in Swindon.
The Honda factory, which operated in Swindon for 36 years, closed in 2021. The land on which the closed plants are located was purchased by Panattoni in early 2022. The developer has already completed another project in Swindon, delivering Amazon's logistics centre at nearby Symmetry Park in 2021.
James Watson, development director at Panattoni, reported that the company intends to invest GBP 700 mln in the project over the next five years. Panattoni estimates that the new project will provide 7,000 employment opportunities. This compares to Honda's 2019 workforce of around 2,500.
Construction work will begin with the demolition of the closed factory.
