Polska Signum Work Station Earns ActiveScore Platinum
Office & mixed-use development
ActiveScore is an independent building assessment system that evaluates how well properties support active commuting, from bicycle parking, changing rooms and showers to programmes encouraging employees to leave their cars at home. The final audit covered 18 areas, including the location and security of bicycle parking, shower and changing facilities, and communication with tenants.
Signum Work Station achieved the highest ActiveScore rating – Platinum. The building received full marks for the location of bicycle parking for tenants and visitors, the number of bicycle spaces relative to local standards, the availability of showers and drying facilities, bicycle maintenance and repair services, information and communication, and initiatives supporting the cycling community.
Achieving ActiveScore certification required us to look at active mobility much more broadly than simply focusing on bicycle storage, changing rooms or showers. We considered the entire journey to work – from getting to the building safely and securing a bicycle or other equipment to being able to get ready for work comfortably. Achieving Platinum status was the result of the whole team’s commitment, a creative approach to the certification requirements and the introduction of additional solutions that genuinely improve the comfort and safety of people who commute to Signum Work Station by bicycle or other forms of active mobility.
Piotr Iwanowski, ESG manager, BREEAM-In-Use assessor and certification coordinator at CBRE Poland
Tenants at Signum Work Station have access to 152 covered and secure bicycle parking spaces in the building’s garage, while visitors can use a further 62 spaces at the main and rear entrances. The building has nine showers, including one adapted for people with disabilities, as well as 186 lockers for personal belongings.
Cyclists can also use a publicly accessible repair station equipped with a maintenance stand, pump, tool kit and puncture repair accessories, as well as a clothes-drying room. A Veturilo city bike station is located next to the building, while several operators offer e-scooters and e-bikes in the surrounding area.
The building has an active cycling community, coordinated by a dedicated active mobility programme manager. Tenants can join a group for people who commute by bicycle, while a free annual bicycle inspection combined with anti-theft marking is also organised. Information about the available facilities is regularly shared with tenants through newsletters, printed materials and screens in the reception area.
The best buildings supporting active mobility are not defined by any single amenity, but by the way facilities, services and user engagement work together. Signum Work Station is a good example of this approach, combining extensive facilities for cyclists and high-quality amenities for active commuters with practical support and community-building initiatives. Achieving ActiveScore Platinum reflects a genuine commitment to giving people greater choice in how they travel to and from work.
James Nash, co-founder of ActiveScore
According to the ActiveScore emissions calculator, full use of Signum Work Station’s bicycle facilities could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 5 pct and PM2.5 emissions by 5 pct compared with an average office building in the Warsaw region. On an annual basis, this translates into savings of approximately 52 tonnes of carbon dioxide and 10 tonnes of particulate matter.
The Platinum rating confirms that investing in facilities for cyclists and other active commuters creates real value for building users rather than simply adding to the standard office offering. More and more employees are choosing bicycles and other forms of active mobility for their daily commute, so modern office buildings need to provide comfortable and safe conditions throughout the entire journey. At Signum Work Station, this goes beyond providing dedicated facilities. It is a comprehensive set of solutions – from safe and clearly signposted access to bicycle parking and secure storage to showers and other amenities that allow people to freshen up and get ready for work. ActiveScore certification gives us a way to assess these solutions as a whole against an international standard. Achieving a Platinum rating confirms that our approach meets the needs of our users and reflects what tenants increasingly expect from well-managed, welcoming and sustainable workplaces.
