In the city’s Mokotów district, meanwhile, the Annual Eurobuild Tennis Tournament was taking place on the courts of the Warszawianka tennis club. The contest has already become a well-established fixture on the local real estate calendar, but it is still growing in popularity and competitiveness. This year, however, it threw up a few surprises.
In a feat of some organisational brilliance, I might modestly add, more than a hundred matches were played on the day. In the round-robin group stages a rapid-fire tie-break format (the first to 7 or more points by two clear points) was used to narrow down the 27 men to the eight quarter-finalists and the eight women who entered to the four semi-finalists.
Once the group stages had ended and lunch had been taken in the very pleasant club pavilion, the knockout rounds could begin. This time one-set matches were played in each round. As it turned out, the men’s tournament had its own Boris Becker, with Krzysztof Stempień of Cresa winning it at his very first attempt in a one-sided final (6-1) against another newcomer to the competition, Michał Kosyrz of RedNet Property. The third place play-off was won by last year’s champion, Anton Bashtavy of Centerscape, who overcame Mateusz Polit of Art Project.
