Virtual, but not unreal

Editorial
What does a football fan do when Poland wins Euro 2012? Turn off the console and go to bed. This was one of jokes circulating on the net after the white and reds crashed out of the recent European Football Championships and a good example of Polish laughter through the tears. It also makes me realise that the virtual world, designed and created by us, is somehow an attempt to replace the real one.
The reality of the internet can at the same time be highly tangible, as are the millions that can be earned from it. One of the people who knows all about this is the creator of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg although in his case we should actually be speaking more in terms of billions rather than millions. But what is the connection between social media and real estate? Nearly 17 mln Poles have accounts with such services, of which app. 12.5 mln publish content on Facebook. These are the people our industry is now trying to enter into a dialogue with. The result? There have been ups and downs so far, but this is a field that certainly should not be ignored, as you can read about in more depth in this issue. The empire of Mark Zuckerberg is often compared to another American icon of the industry: Google. So what does this, the brainchild of two Stanford University students working in Silicon Valley, also have to do with the real estate market, in particular when it comes to the work of property valuers? Well, it is the fact that the former could make the latter obsolete and consider a change in career... I'm only joking, but this reminds me that some of our own country's sportsmen should also consider a career change, despite the fact that, after all, we have made some progress this year: this is the first championships at which our footballers have not had to go home at the end of the tournament
