WXCA wins Baltic Sea Art Park competition

ESTONIA Polish architectural studio WXCA has won the Baltic Sea Art Park international architectural competition and has been awarded a prize of EUR 5,000 for its KGAMMP design.
The competition aimed to find the best spatial solution for establishing an art park in the heart of Pärnu. The art park will be located on the left shore of Pärnu River, close to the only road bridge, the historical Suursild (Great Bridge). The jury awarded the second prize of EUR 3,000 to the entry entitled “A Welcoming Fortification”, by London-based architectural studio Stanton Williams. The third prize of EUR 2,000, went to the Tuututama project, which was designed by two Spanish architectural studios: Acha Zaballa Arquitectos and Bilbao Architecture Team. Special mentions (EUR 1,000) were also given to the Veemaailm project, designed by the Arhitektuuribüroo Luhse ja Tuhal studio, and Landmark by Romanian architect Bogdan Neagu. The jury comprised British art historian Edward Lucie-Smith, Toomas Kivimägi the mayor of Pärnu, architects Kim Utzon from Denmark, Pekka Vapaavuori from Finland, Ilmar Reepalu from Sweden, Indrek Näkk and Jaak Huimerind from the Union of Estonian Architects, Mark Soosaar, the head of Uue Kunsti Muuseumi (the Museum of New Art), and Pärnu city architect Karri Tiigisoon. The competitors had to find a spatial solution for both the park on the left shore of Pärnu River, the area of garages and the historic granite pier, as well as to present the architectural sketch solution for the main building located on dry land and to propose the sketch for one sample pavilion located in the water. The competition was organised by SA Uue Kunsti Muuseum in cooperation with the Union of Estonian Architects and Pärnu City Government. The main prize (EUR 5,000) was funded by the Cultural Endowment.
