Architectural iconoclast

The world’s best designed house is Aatrial House near Opole, which was designed by Robert Konieczny of the KWK Promes studio. In March, this Polish architect won the prestigious House of the Year competition organized by World Architecture News. Our modest High Flyer of the Month title may now be added to the list of Robert Konieczny’s prizes and distinctions

What do you like most and least about doing business in Poland?

Doing business in Poland gives you a prickle of excitement.

I like that injection of adrenaline when I wonder whether I’ll be paid or whether I shall never ever see my money. What I don’t like is the possibility of an unexpected heart attack which that may cause.

Who do you most admire in the real estate business?

I can say whom I admire on the Polish architecture market which is – no one. There are still no outstanding personalities in Poland but I hope that will change.

How did you first get into real estate?

My career actually began during my studies with the many international competitions I won in that period. That was the point when we decided, together with my professional partner Marzena Wolnik, to establish our KWK Promes company.

What do you regard as your greatest professional success so far?

 My greatest success is the

House of the Year 2006 prize for Aatrial House. I have been offered many opinions, such as that it is the greatest success so far of Polish architecture. But there were several others, from exceptionally poor project ratings up to the Rybnik Fire Brigade Station, which took an interminable 8 years to build.

What contribution do you think you have made to Polish society through your professional activities?

My buildings have definitely generated discussion since they provoke reaction. And when they are discussed, that is good for it means people are thinking. Creating innovative buildings means destroying stereotypes and habits which, in turn, means development. And that is my contribution to Polish society.

Which major projects are you planning in the near future?

Several highly interesting projects are presently being created in our office. And that is what I want to focus on, to ensure they are made in the very best way possible. As regards further plans, I prefer to say nothing to avoid jinxing.

Which is your favourite building and why?

I understand you are talking of buildings in Poland. The Katowice Saucer is the building I like best, since it represents excellent architecture and was constructed when everything was being botched.

Which living person do you most admire and why?

Rem Koolhas the brilliant architect first comes to mind, since he has brilliant ideas.

With which historical figure do you most identify?

I could tell you which I would like to be identified with but my character brings me close to figures whom I prefer not to mention.

What is your fondest memory?

I cannot mention it publicly and I don’t want to lie.

What is your idea of a perfect day?

Today I can say that I dream of a day which depends on the period in which I happen to be. I dream, at present, of switching off my mobile and of undisturbed peace and quiet, but when I’m bored I dream of just the opposite.

Which is your favourite restaurant and why?

I have no preferred restaurant; due to lack of time I eat anywhere and anything. But I do hope that is going to change.

Who is your closest friend and why?

My dogs, because they worship me and ask no questions.

Which characteristic do you hate most in others?

Lack of a sense of humour.

How would you like to be remembered?

Like Zorro. But seriously – as someone who has left an indelible Polish mark in contemporary world architecture.
