Echo reveals latest concept for Nowa Cracovia

Architecture and urban planning
POLAND Echo Investment has changed its design for the former Cracovia hotel in Kraków and presented its concept for the development of al. Marszałka Ferdinanda Focha in Kraków’s Błonie district to Jacek Majchrowski, the mayor of Kraków.
The architectural design of Nowa Cracovia was drawn up by the DDJM architectural studio. The current land-use conditions do not allow for a retail area of more than 2,000 sqm, but the proposed project has a retail area of 17,000 sqm out of a total area of 25,000 sqm. The centre would include shops, restaurants and a museum. The project would be connected to ul. Piłsudskiego via an underground passageway. Echo Investment has previously claimed that the former Cracovia hotel is unsuitable for modernisation, but according to the land-use conditions neither can it be dismantled. The local authorities have agreed to allow the building to be knocked down in future conditions that have yet to be drawn up, but have made such a possibility subject to a number of qualifications. In June 2013, Echo investment revealed its original plans for the site, which had been drawn up by a team of architects led by Witold Cęckiewicz, the designer of the former hotel, but the concept was rejected by the city authorities.
