ESTONIA Estonian Centre of Architecture is holding an international competition to find a project to represent Estonia at the 16th La Biennale di Venezia Architecture Exhibition to be held in Venice. The first stage of the public two-stage competition will close on the 31st of May, 2017 with five entries being chosen to move onto the second stage, all of which are to be exhibited publicly on the 15th June 2017 in Tallinn.
The winner of the competition will be announced on 19th June 2017. The Estonian exhibit, including the competition, for the international biennial exhibition is being organised by the Estonian Centre of Architecture in co-operation with the Union of Estonian Architects and with support from Estonian Ministry of Culture and from the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.
The Venice Architecture Biennale is an exhibition that has been steadily growing in size with visitor numbers rising from 178,000 in 2012 to 228,000 in 2014 and then rising a further 14 pct in 2016 to 260,000. The event brings together a global perspective and forms a dialogue about how architecture can advance the living environment. In recent years the competition’s exhibits have used architecture almost as a pretext to manifest social and political issues. Yet the focus has been, and will be for 2018 on “the quality of public and private space, of urban space, of the surroundings and of the landscape being the major references and purpose of the architecture,” stated Paolo Baratta the president of the Biennale, when he introduced the curators of the 16th La Biennale di Venezia Architecture Exhibition, Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara.
Entries for the Estonian exhibit should reflect both current global issues and important ideas and practices in contemporary Estonian architecture, focusing on what it is that currently makes architecture important. International teams entering the competition are expected to include members that are familiar with Estonian architecture. Entries can be either in Estonian or English and the competition is open to art theorists, architects, designers, interior designers, historians and other professionals from the field of architecture.
The Estonian Centre of Architecture (ECA) is a non-profit organisation that maintains Estonia’s architectural culture and promotes contemporary Estonian architecture abroad. In addition to being responsible for the Estonian exhibit in Venice, the centre also organises the Tallinn Architecture Biennial TAB as well as other architectural events in Tallinn and networking events abroad.
