Logistics firms feeling the heat from e-commerce

E-commerce
POLAND According to the recent ‘Supply Chain for E-commerce. How to Meet the Challenges’ report published by DHL Supply Chain, most logistics companies in the contract logistics sector have yet to implement a strategy for the online retail segment.

Almost 900 global logistics and supply chain providers, including those that are active in the e-commerce sector, were surveyed for the report. Out of these, almost 70 pct of B2C companies and 60 pct of B2B companies are still working on the introduction of strategies for this market segment. This is despite the fact that 70 pct of respondents regard e-commerce as ‘very important’ or ‘extremely important’ for their business.

“Customer expectations are evolving and changing, putting pressure on companies to expand their e-commerce range. Supply chains need to keep up with all the new business models, customer service expectations and technological needs to retain and win new customers,” points out Nabil Malouli, the global e-commerce product head of DHL Supply Chain.

In his opinion, growing requirements in the field of e-commerce will force more than 50 pct of such companies to adapt their distribution strategies accordingly over the next few years. In order to manage these changes, many firms will opt to cooperate with an external logistics partner that will provide them with the required knowledge and support to respond adequately to the changing business environment.

DHL provides logistics services in more than 220 countries around the world. It is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
