Skanska has entered into a partnership with the WasteTracker startup. The smart waste counter will help monitor and report on waste streams, supporting the process of responsible building management. The system will operate across Skanska's current portfolio in Central and Eastern Europe.
The waste produced by tenants of office buildings is an important component of calculating the carbon footprint of an organisation, but also of the office building itself. In order to manage it better, the office company Skanska has partnered with the WasteTracker startup, whose creators have developed a tool of the same name.
This innovative solution will support the tenants of our office buildings in the implementation of their ESG strategy and CSRD reporting, and will allow us to better understand how to adapt our investments even better to the requirements of a closed loop economy.

WasteTracker consists of a weighing terminal, using the access cards of the building's employees, and an analytical system. Waste, even before it is placed in the building's containers, is weighed and recorded. Each tenant gains direct access to the analytical system so that they can understand the volumes of waste generated in their company, as well as visualise the carbon footprint they generate by fraction. Together with WasteTracker, tenants can analyse the data and select the most appropriate actions for education and promotion of good practices in waste reduction, reuse or segregation. This is the first such solution in Europe.
Trying to eliminate waste without accurate metering can be compared to trying to drive a car safely without a speedometer.
WasteTracker initially helps you measure your actual waste production, then supports you in understanding the data using benchmarks and knowledge of your zero waste strategy. As part of the collaboration, we identify the most important areas for improvement, e.g. whether it is the overall amount of waste or perhaps the disruption between segregated fractions. A different zero waste strategy will be adopted by a building that has 90 pct mixed waste and one that generates 30 pct bio waste. In ESG activities, we need outreach activities, otherwise we have no chance of achieving zero carbon by 2050.

The WasteTracker system will operate in seven Skanska buildings in Central and Eastern Europe: the Wave in Gdańsk, the Brama Miasta in Łódź, the Centrum Południe in Wrocław (phase 2) and the Studio B and P180 office buildings in Warsaw. In addition, it will benefit tenants in the Czech project Port7 and the first building in the Equilibrium project, located in Bucharest.
