POLAND Skanska brings anti-smog pavements to Poznań
Green projectsdeputy editor
The Swedish developer is to lay almost 4,000 sqm of pavement using green concrete for building D of the complex, which is now under construction. Each year this will neutralise the equivalent of pollution generated by a car that has travelled 70,000 km.
Through exposure to solar rays, the number of harmful NOx particles is then broken down on the pavement’s surface into neutral nitrogen compounds that are discharged into the soil with rainwater. The concrete, which has been successfully tested by Skanska in projects in Warsaw, Kraków and Gdańsk, also has self-cleaning properties. Tests carried out by the company show that areas with green concrete have on average a 30 pct lower concentration of nitrogen dioxide than those with standard surfaces.
The work on the pavement is to start in Q1 2021 and will be completed together with building D in 2022.
Green concrete is eventually to be used as standard in Skanska’s projects in Poland. Sustainable construction is in our DNA – and this is our latest contribution to it. Last year we set ourselves the goals of achieving carbon neutrality by 2045 and a 50 pct carbon emission reduction by 2030.

Nowy Rynek, which is situated between ul. Matyi, ul. Wierzbięcice, ul. Wujka and ul. Przemysłowa close to Poznań Główny railway station, will ultimately comprise five buildings with office, service, retail and residential functions over more than 100,000 sqm. Each building of the complex is to be LEED and Building Without Barriers certified, while building D will be the first in the region to receive Well Core & Shell certification.
The first building (B) offers about 25,000 sqm of office space, the second (A) 12,000 sqm, and the third (D) 39,000 sqm.
The general contractor is Skanska SA. JEMS Architekci is responsible for the urban design of the project, while Wrocław studio Maćków Pracownia Projektowa designed the first two buildings (A and B). Building D has been designed by Medusa Group. Ultra Architects is responsible for the development of the space within the complex.
